Q:
My Comporium Dial-Up connection keeps dropping. What steps can I take to troubleshoot this issue?
Answer:
Are you having problems with disconnects on your Comporium dial-up connection? There are several reasons for this type of issue:
• Your computer may be automatically disconnecting you due to a setting many people are not aware of - the “idle timeout”. To change this setting, use the following directions:
Windows 2000/XP:
1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
2. Click on Network Connections (If you do not see this, change the Control Panel display to “Classic View” in the top-left corner of the Control Panel window.).
3. Right-click your dial-up connection and select Properties.
4. Choose the Options tab and look for the setting Idle time before hanging up.
5. Change the setting to a timeframe greater than 20 minutes. To disable this feature, change the setting to never.
6. Click on OK.
Windows 98:
1. Click Start, then Settings and Control Panel.
2. Open the Modems control panel.
3. This will open the Modems Properties page on the General tab. You will be able to see the name of your modem listed on this window.
4. Click on the Connection tab.
5. Look for the setting Disconnect a call if idle for more than…
6. Change this setting to a higher timeframe. To disable the setting, uncheck the box beside the setting.
7. Click on OK.
8. On the dial-up connection properties window, click on OK.
• Another common cause of disconnects is line noise. Unplug everything connected to your phone lines (i.e., caller ID boxes, extension telephones, cordless telephones, other modems, fax machines). The modem should be the only thing connected to your phone line. If the problem goes away, there is something connected to your phone line inside the house causing you to disconnect. Sometimes defective cables and loose connections will cause disconnects. Make sure all connections are tight (the phone line “snaps” in). Examine all telephone cables, or better still, try replacing it. If possible try another jack.
• If you have call waiting, remember to add *70, (asterisk +7 + 0 + , ) to the front of the modem phone number to disable call waiting. Otherwise every time someone calls you, the modem will disconnect. Generally, you should be able to maintain a connection for as long as you wish. There will always be an occasional disconnect due to dealing with phone lines being pushed to the very limits of their capacity when using the latest generation of modems. However, you should not get repeated disconnects. If you continue to have issues with frequent disconnections, please call technical support for further troubleshooting.
