Q:
Can I buy my own cable modem?
Answer:
Yes, but the cable modem is provided with the cable modem service. Should you decide to use your own cable modem, it must be DOCSIS 2.0 compliant. You will also need to inform Comporium that you are providing your own cable modem and provide them with the cable modem MAC address (found on the cable modem) for it to work properly.

Q:
Can I use a cable splitter to connect a television to the same connection as my cable modem?
Answer:
Comporium recommends that customers not utilize a cable splitter to share their cable connection between a cable modem and cable TV. Cable splitters lower the overall signal power being delivered to the cable modem, which will affect its performance..

Q:
How does a two-way cable modem work?
Answer:
Comporium delivers high-speed Internet access through the use of the same coaxial cable that delivers your television signals. We have installed special cable modem equipment that transmits Internet data through the coaxial network on an unused channel. Even though these Internet signals reside on the same system as your television signals, there is no interference. This allows you the ability to watch TV and use your cable modem all at the same time. In this two-way system, your computer uses the cable modem for both sending (uploading) and receiving (downloading) data, allowing for high speeds in both directions.

Q:
How does the cable TV network connect to my computer?
Answer:
The cable TV network is connected to a cable modem by a coaxial cable (like the one that connects your TV set to the cable TV network). The cable modem is then connected to your computer through an Ethernet cable and communicates with your computer through an Ethernet card that is already installed in your computer.

Q:
What can a two-way cable modem do for me that a dial-up Internet connection cannot do?
Answer:
A two-way cable modem is always connected to the Internet as long as the computer is on. There is no need to dial in to begin a session; therefore, customers will not have to worry about receiving busy signals from their Internet Service Provider (ISP). Since cable modems use the cable TV network, customers are capable of making/receiving phone calls while they are using the Internet. Cable modems are up to 160 times faster and of better quality than the standard dial-up connection. With this type of high-speed connection, customers can experience the Internet the way it was meant to be experienced.

Q:
What can I do prior to contacting technical support if I cannot connect?
Answer:
A simple way to troubleshoot your cable modem connection is to powercycle. To perform this process: 1. Unplug the cable modem power cord (thin black cord) from the back of the modem. If you have a router, unplug its power cord as well. 2. Wait approximately 30 seconds. 3. Plug ONLY the cable modem in and wait for the “Cable” or “Online” light to become solid (Note: if the light does not become solid, contact technical support). Then plug the router back in. 4. Restart any computers connected. If you still cannot connect, contact technical support.

Q:
What might cause my Comporium High Speed service to use excessive bandwidth?
Answer:
1. File sharing programs such as Audiogalaxy, WinMX, Kazaa, Gnutella, eDonkey, iMESH and many more advertise themselves as P2P (peer to peer). They are a means of sharing many types of files (most commonly MP3 music or movies). Unless you properly configure these programs, you may allow others to freely access shared files on your computer. This allows other Internet users to share, or in some cases steal, your bandwidth. You must make sure not to enable file sharing when installing or configuring these programs. If the program you use does not allow you to disable file sharing, set it to the minimum requirement. Please note that Comporium does not recommend, support, or advocate that its users install and use any P2P softwre. These networks are often used for distribution of illegally copied versions of mucis, video, and software applications.
2. Viruses, worms, and spyware often utilize your Internet connection to send data back to another computer or to infect other users on the network. These processes can utilize LOTS of bandwidth.
3. These days, there are lots of different file types (music, video, etc) that are very large. You may be a bandwidth "power user" and may need to upgrade to a higher service plan.
